Due to poor results from uDraw hardware and software sales THQ has announced it is halting production of the product and "exiting development of traditional kids' licensed console games".
The news came from the THQ Fiscal 2012 Third Quarter Results, which showed that despite success from core IP's such as Saints Row: The Third and WWE '12, the tablet dampened profits by approximately $33 Million. Brian Farrell, THQ President and Chief Executive Officer said:
"Sales of the uDraw GameTablet and related software, and other titles in the kids, family and casual category were far weaker than anticipated, substantially reducing our financial results for the quarter."
Other information that can be gleaned from the report, is that Saints Row: The Third is the largest owned-IP launch in THQ's history (shipping over 3.6 million units to date), with the developer expecting to ship "between five and six million units over the life of this title".
Overall the california based publisher/developer seems optimistic as the report leads on to point out that:
"THQ was the #5 publisher (#4 third-party publisher) in the U.S. in calendar 2011 with 5.4 percent market share and retail revenues up 16 percent year-over-year"
This along with the intended release schedule for 2012 which includes the likes of: Darksiders 2, Metro: Last Night, South Park: The Game, and Devil's Third, THQ could end up with a very successful 2012.
