(Z) VODDY vs GOMAS (T)
The final consisted of two Bo3's contested by the winners of the Winner's and Loser's brackets respectively - Sweden's Voddy and the UK's Gomas.
Game 1 - Tal'Darim Altar LE
Bo3 (1)
Bo3 (1)
Voddy starts off the match as a whole with a 2-0 advantage over Gomas, as a reward for qualifying through the winner's bracket.
Gomas opens up with rather a lot of reapers, rising to 4 barracks producing solely that. The initial wave does a good bit of damage, limiting the production capabilities of Voddy significantly.
Voddy manages to build up a sizeable force of zerglings (with zergling speed on the way), but mistakenly moves the force away to force a base trade situation. Unfortunately this was the wrong decision as Gomas repairs his supply depot wallin with his SCV's. Frustrated at his decision making, Voddy leaves the game without saying "gg".
Game 2 - Xel'Naga Fortress
Voddy seemed to be on tilt from the last game. The zerg who 2-0'd everyone up until this point of the tournament was defeated by a somewhat gimmicky Terran play, which didn't allow him to build up both his economy and confidence.
Gomas attempts to establish a psychological advantage early in the game by planting a bunker behind Voddy's natural expansion. Voddy immediately expects the worst and sets to work trying to destroy the bunker which Gomas does not use.
Meanwhile, Gomas opens up with double reactor hellions. Unable to pierce Voddy's defensive wall, he parks them just outside to prevent creep spread. A mixture of supply blockage and poor decisions prevented Voddy from combatting Gomas' follow up of marine-tank. With some good positioning, Gomas forced the win and Voddy yet again leaves without a gg in sight. To quote TotalBiscuit: "This is not the same Voddy we have been seeing in this tournament."
With this, Gomas takes the first Bo3 2-0.
Game 1 - Shattered Temple
Bo3 (2)
Shattered Temple, a somewhat Terran favoured map due to the easy tank positioning, was a somewhat unlucky situation for an already demoralised Voddy. And at the beginning, it looked like the past Bo3 was already going to repeat itself severely. A bunker harrass behind the natural is crushed easily by Voddy, but a hellion follow up denies all mining at his natural.
Gomas' 2 tank and marine push soon plants itself outside the natural of Voddy. He seiges one tank at a very long run distance, shooting over a gorge. This makes it extremely difficult for the zerglings of Voddy to get rid of it.
However, some perfect timing and patience from Voddy pays off. His zerglings, spine crawlers, and two hero queens manage to dispatch Gomas' pressure, buying him a huge amount of time to prepare for any future attacks, or aggression of his own.
This was the momentum swing that Voddy desperately needed. With aggressive creep spread and expanding, he quickly built up a fearsome economy while teching to infestors to combat Gomas' large number of marines. Gomas couldn't combat Voddy's fearsome macro advantage. Voddy quickly started toying with the turtling Gomas, overpowering him with his superior macro until forcing the gg.
Game 2 - Shakura's Plateau
Voddy opens with his usual macro oriented opener, 15 hatch 15 pool, intending to use the gasless "spanishiwa" style that he's had so much success with thus far. Gomas however opts for 1 barracks 1 factory 1 starport. With this Gomas pumps out some cloaked banshees. Losing his first banshee however, ruins the surprise factor of this build. Gomas' momentum however, is long gone. Despite failing to punish Gomas' quick third, Voddy's ling bling muta "battering ram" style keeps Gomas on the defensive back foot for the entire game, as well as keeping the marine tank army in check.
Voddy's superior multitasking pulls Gomas in all sorts of different directions, applying lots of pressure to his mineral lines. Harrassing while expanding proves to be key as Gomas allows Voddy to expand near enough freely. No map control or aggression force Gomas to resort to building a huge amount of Ravens as his economy implodes, and the game starts to get ridiculous.
A ridiculous stalemate emerges. Voddy cannot break the centre of the map with his ground army, and yet a huge number of Ghosts annihilate his Infestors and Broodlords. Unable to push himself, Gomas' Ravens build and build in the bottom corner of the map.
Voddy finally finds a gap in Gomas' "impenetrable" defence, and begins annihilating all of the buildings his lings can lay their claws on. Responsding like a true Terran (zerg bias lol), Gomas lifts off his buildings, floats them to the corner of the map, and plants dozens of point defence drones to protect them and the couple of Vikings he has.
Basically, Gomas is trolling by this point. Unable to attack, Voddy's Corruptors try in vain to break the PDD wall. Mutalisks join in, and to the frustration of the casting duo dApollo and TotalBiscuit, the game drags on.
tl;dr: This went on for ages, with the game turning into the longest i44 has ever seen. Eventually Gomas admits defeat and leaves. Ryung, a top Korean player, happens to be in the room, and watches sceptically. Facepalm.
